" They tell you to be yourself and then they judge you"
It was just a few days back that while scrolling down the pages of my social media feeds, I came across a post, where a mother staying in Toronto, wrote about how her son became the prey of school bullyism ,which even got his life. The post was in fact a request which she had made to the school authorities regarding their cooperation.
The school authorities hadn't cooperated as they thought it might degrade their reputation..such was their attitude towards a student who studied at their school..
You must have heard about the story of " Thirteen reasons why" ( though there's no offence in not knowing about it). It's not a story of only Hannah Baker or of some high school student but its way more than that. Its a story of how the present society works. It's a story that says: " They tell you to be yourself and then they judge you".
"Bullyism" The word seems so lucid to spell, but behind the curtain of these letters lies so many cases of self doubt, self isolation, under confidence, self embarrassment and even depression which ultimately leads to Suicide; after which people come and mourn over the loss- the same loss that could have been averted.
Bullyism, is not the story of any school or any college, it is however a story that we see nearly see every day, it is a story of our society, it is a story of how to look bold, of how to laugh at someone , of how to criticize the other of anything they do. It is often thought to be a way of being cool, a way of amusement regardless the fact of what the other is facing. It may be an amusement of some while at the same time it can be a real nightmare for the other.
Most of the time I have seen (as we had some big bullies in our own class) bullying becomes a scene for the others to see and make fun of. Maybe there is someone amongst the crowd who feels sorry but there is hardly anyone coming to the forefront taking a stand for the victim,to be by his/hers side. It is that in such cases, the victim may sometimes become weak and it becomes the responsibility for friends to come closer and support him/her, to raise a helping hand,to say" We are with you" .
This not only boosts the confidence in the victim, but also gives them a feeling of reassurance that someone is there for them, that someone understands what he/she is going through and that's more than anything one can do, in their part.
Bullyism , I believe is one of the evils of the society, which is constantly neglected. It is always believed to be a prank and often shrugged off . People becomes oblivious of what the other is facing and refuse to stand up with them. If this continues then there will always be some Hannah Baker in every school or college and everyone will be responsible for the same. Thus time is running out and it is our responsibility to stop bothering others life and "Live and let others live".
